Windows 8 is now official. Starting October 26th, consumers around the world, in 140 countries, will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro through online download or by purchasing a retail DVD upgrade pack from select retailers. Along with Windows 8 OS, a range of Windows 8 PCs, ultrabooks, tablets and hybrid devices are also debuting around the world.

Microsoft’s official blog introduces Windows 8, this way —

Windows 8 represents a reimagining of Windows. It provides a personalized experience with a beautiful new user interface that puts you at the center. You get a great experience for entertainment AND creating content all on the same device, either with touch or with a mouse and keyboard. No compromise.

 

Around the world, over 1,000 Windows 8 certified devices that will be available beginning October 26th. PCs will come with either Windows RT or Windows 8 Pro. Microsoft is setting up special Holiday Stores across the United States, to prepare for the Holiday rush. The first stored open in New York City at the Times Square.

But, if you are outside the U.S., you can get your Windows 8 PCs, tablets, and upgrades through Microsoft’s online stores and various local and national retailers.

Windows 8 Upgrades Around the World

If you are in one of the 140 countries, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 (U.S.) online at Windows.com in 37 supported languages and 23 supported currencies. The retail DVD Upgrade pack is priced at $69.99, and includes both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Only Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 users qualify for this upgrade. The upgrade offer is valid only upto January 31, 2013.

If you purchased a Windows 7 PC between June 2nd, 2012, and January 31st, 2013, you can register for the Windows Upgrade Offer where you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $14.99 (U.S.).

Windows 8 Upgrades In India

If you are in India, you can download and upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for a retail price of INR 1,999. If you are looking for a retail DVD to upgrade, you will have to pay INR 3,499. Those who have bought Windows PCs since June 2nd, 2012 can buy Windows 8 Pro for INR 699. To claim the offer, visit windowsupgradeoffer.com

Windows 8 PCs and tablets will be available in India from 14 manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HCL, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lenovo, RP Infosystems, Sai Info System, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Wipro and Zenith Computers, with a total of 250 Windows 8 enabled devices.
